Leg Lifts - this is HARD but you need it.  These muscles are the ones you use
to walk in a straight line.  Do you walk like a penguin?  If so, then this is for you.
If it's too hard, try it in standing position.
Hamstring stretch - an 'oldie but a goodie' - the hamstring stretch will improve
bending, lifting and twisting.  A favorite of runners and athletes.
Same exercise except this is done in the sidelying position to work against
gravity - makes it harder!
'The Clam' as we call it in the clinic, aka: sidelying hip external rotation...
- great for piriformis syndrome, sciatica and for improving that golf swing.
Knee Lifts - get those knees straight!  Prevent falls, slips and trips.  Add
sandbags or ankle weight to this one to make it harder.
Cross Legs - another good way to loosen up the stiffness in your hips.  See the
physical therapist take a measurement to look for unevenness (asymmetry).

Sitting Hip Twist helps with flexibility of those stiff hips.  Look for uneven
(asymmetric) hip joint motion - an early sign of arthritis.
Butt Builder - great for those hip and butt muscles.  Careful with your wrists - if
they hurt, try making fists to support your upper body.

Diagnosis
blog
Hip and knee exercises for conditions such as

  • lumbar spinal stenosis
  • hip trochanteric bursitis
  • sciatica
  • degenerative disc disease and more!

How can physical therapy exercise help these diagnoses?

Medical diagnoses a
re often more terrifying than the actual problem.  For example, your problem might be
that you cant raise your arm up overhead.  Maybe your doctor said you have a
rotator cuff injury.  Your
physical therapist might find that your shoulder was weak, stiff and painful.

Physical therapists help pe
ople with weakness and stiffness that lead to disability.

People often come to physical therapy with the following problems...

  • I can't walk more than 1city block
  • I can't bend over to tie my shoes
  • I can't raise my arm overhead to put on a shirt
  • I can't play golf without my (back, hip, shoulder) hurting

Physical therapy will address the underlying stiffness and weakness that leads to these functional
problems.   W
