Golfers can get better golf by improving the muscles and the movements of their trunk.

The trunk is made of the following:

  • your ribs
  • your lower back bone
  • back muscles
  • your belly (aka: the abdominals)

Your abdominal muscles bend and twist your trunk.  Twisting is often called 'rotation' by
physical therapists.

The golfers' swing is an example of extreme trunk rotation.

Turning your trunk is accomplished by your abdominal muscles.  Weak abdominal muscles
(usually the case if you have a big belly) will limit your ability to properly turn your trunk.

Turning is essential to a well-hit golf shot and to freedom from back pain.

Strong abdominals will produce a better, longer golf shot.

Weak abdominals and limited trunk rotation may also be a source of lower back pain.

Two ways to improve the trunk turning motion are the following:

  • improved abdominal muscle strength and support and...
  • improved trunk (ribcage) rotation.

The 'trunk turning' exercise is a standard physical therapy exercise that is safe
and comfortable.  Use this to increase your swing for those powerful drives off
of the tee.
Your trunk bending motion is important also.  Trunk bending happens both on
and off the golf course all day long.  Improper bending is a common source of
lower back pain.
